Roger Ballen

Here are some images I'm looking at from the photographer Roger Ballen. I'm really into the child-like scrawling all over the walls, and the masks. I don't think we necessarily want face masks for the actors, but how can the costume be like a mask? The newspaper suits are also really interesting to me.

I'm really trying to work with the idea of "strange intimacy". Just did a presentation on Mnouchkine, and she also uses Asia to create a distance in her work. Putting that together with rock and roll music, this is the first thought I had. Manga.
